A [?] SCANDAL [sk?ndl] IN [?n] BOHEMIA [b??hi¦mj?]
I [w?n].
To [tu¦] Sherlock [??¦l?k] Holmes [h??mz] she [?i¦] is [?z] always [?¦lwe?z] the [??] woman [w?m?n]. I [a?] have [h?v] seldom [s?ld?m] heard [h?¦d] him [h?m] mention [m?n??n] her [h?¦r] under [?nd?r] any [?ni] other [???] name [ne?m]. In [?n] his [h?z] eyes [a?z] she [?i¦] eclipses [?kl?ps?z] and [?nd] predominates [pr?d?m?ne?ts] the [??] whole [h??l] of [?v] her [h?¦] sex [s?ks]. It [?t] was [w?z] not [n?t] that [??t] he [hi¦] felt [f?lt] any [?ni] emotion [?m????n] akin [?k?n] to [tu¦] love [l?v] for [f?¦r] Irene [a?ri¦n] Adler. All [?¦l] emotions [?m????nz], and [?nd] that [??t] one [w?n] particularly [p?t?kj?l?li], were [w?¦r] abhorrent [?bh?r?nt] to [tu¦] his [h?z] cold [k??ld], precise [pr?sa?z] but [b?t] admirably [?dm?r?bli] balanced [b?l?nst] mind [ma?nd]. He [hi¦] was [w?z], I [a?] take [te?k] it [?t], the [??] most [m??st] perfect [p?¦f?kt] reasoning [ri¦zn?n] and [?nd] observing [?bz?¦v?n] machine [m??i¦n] that [??t] the [??] world [w?¦ld] has [h?z] seen [si¦n], but [b?t] as [?z] a [?] lover [l?v?] he [hi¦] would [w?d] have [h?v] placed [ple?st] himself [h?ms?lf] in [?n] a [?] false [f?¦ls] position [p?z???n]. He [hi¦] never [n?v?] spoke [sp??k] of [?v] the [??] softer [s?ft?] passions [p???nz], save [se?v] with [w??] a [?] gibe [?a?b] and [?nd] a [?] sneer [sn??]. They [?e?] were [w?¦r] admirable [?dm?r?bl] things [??nz] for [f?¦] the [?i] observer [?bz?¦v?] – excellent [?ks?l?nt] for [f?¦] drawing [dr?¦?n] the [??] veil [ve?l] from [fr?m] men’s [m?nz] motives [m??t?vz] and [?nd] actions [?k?nz]. But [b?t] for [f?¦] the [??] trained [tre?nd] reasoner [ri¦zn?] to [tu¦] admit [?dm?t] such [s??] intrusions [?ntru¦??nz] into [?ntu¦] his [h?z] own [??n] delicate [d?l?k?t] and [?nd] finely [fa?nli] adjusted [???st?d] temperament [t?mp?r?m?nt] was [w?z] to [tu¦] introduce [?ntr?dju¦s] a [?] distracting [d?str?kt?n] factor [f?kt?] which [w??] might [ma?t] throw [?r??] a [?] doubt [da?t] upon [?p?n] all [?¦l] his [h?z] mental [m?ntl] results [r?z?lts]. Grit [gr?t] in [?n] a [?] sensitive [s?ns?t?v] instrument [?nstr?m?nt], or [?¦r] a [?] crack [kr?k] in [?n] one [w?n] of [?v] his [h?z] own [??n] high-power [ha?] [pa??] lenses [l?nz?z], would [w?d] not [n?t] be [bi¦] more [m?¦] disturbing [d?st?¦b?n] than [??n] a [?] strong [str?n] emotion [?m????n] in [?n] a [?] nature [ne???] such [s??] as [?z] his [h?z]. And [?nd] yet [j?t] there [?e?] was [w?z] but [b?t] one [w?n] woman [w?m?n] to [tu¦] him [h?m], and [?nd] that [??t] woman [w?m?n] was [w?z] the [??] late [le?t] Irene [a?ri¦n] Adler, of [?v] dubious [dju¦bi?s] and [?nd] questionable [kw?s??n?bl] memory [m?m?ri].

I [a?] had [h?d] seen [si¦n] little [l?tl] of [?v] Holmes [h??mz] lately [le?tli]. My [ma?] marriage [m?r??] had [h?d] drifted [dr?ft?d] us [?s] away [?we?] from [fr?m] each [i¦?] other [???]. My [ma?] own [??n] complete [k?mpli¦t] happiness [h?p?n?s], and [?nd] the [??] home-centred [h??m] [s?nt?d] interests [?ntr?sts] which [w??] rise [ra?z] up [?p] around [?ra?nd] the [??] man [m?n] who [hu¦] first [f?¦st] finds [fa?ndz] himself [h?ms?lf] master [m?¦st?r] of [?v] his [h?z] own [??n] establishment [?st?bl??m?nt], were [w?¦] sufficient [s?f???nt] to [tu¦] absorb [?bs?¦b] all [?¦l] my [ma?] attention [?t?n?n], while [wa?l] Holmes [h??mz], who [hu¦] loathed [l???d] every [?vri] form [f?¦m] of [?v] society [s?sa??ti] with [w??] his [h?z] whole [h??l] Bohemian [b??hi¦mj?n] soul [s??l], remained [r?me?nd] in [?n] our [a??] lodgings [l???nz] in [?n] Baker [be?k?] Street [stri¦t], buried [b?rid] among [?m?n] his [h?z] old [??ld] books [b?ks], and [?nd] alternating [?¦lt?ne?t?n] from [fr?m] week [wi¦k] to [tu¦] week [wi¦k] between [b?twi¦n] cocaine [k?ke?n] and [?nd] ambition [?mb??n], the [??] drowsiness [dra?z?n?s] of [?v] the [??] drug [dr?g], and [?nd] the [??] fierce [f??s] energy [?n??i] of [?v] his [h?z] own [??n] keen [ki¦n] nature [ne???]. He [hi¦] was [w?z] still [st?l], as [?z] ever [?v?], deeply [di¦pli] attracted [?tr?kt?d] by [ba?] the [??] study [st?di] of [?v] crime [kra?m], and [?nd] occupied [?kj?pa?d] his [h?z] immense [?m?ns] faculties [f?k?ltiz] and [?nd] extraordinary [?kstr?¦dnri] powers [pa??z] of [?v] observation [?bz?ve???n] in [?n] following [f?l???n] out [a?t] those [???z] clues [klu¦z], and [?nd] clearing [kl??r?n] up [?p] those [???z] mysteries [m?st?riz] which [w??] had [h?d] been [bi¦n] abandoned [?b?nd?nd] as [?z] hopeless [h??pl?s] by [ba?] the [?i] official [?f???l] police [p?li¦s]. From [fr?m] time [ta?m] to [tu¦] time [ta?m] I [a?] heard [h?¦d] some [s?m] vague [ve?g] account [?ka?nt] of [?v] his [h?z] doings [du?nz]: of [?v] his [h?z] summons [s?m?nz] to [tu¦] Odessa [??d?s?] in [?n] the [??] case [ke?s] of [?v] the [??] Trepoff murder [m?¦d?], of [?v] his [h?z] clearing [kl??r?n] up [?p] of [?v] the [??] singular [s?ngj?l?] tragedy [tr???di] of [?v] the [?i] Atkinson brothers [br???z] at [?t] Trincomalee, and [?nd] finally [fa?n?li] of [?v] the [??] mission [m???n] which [w??] he [hi¦] had [h?d] accomplished [?k?mpl??t] so [s??] delicately [d?l?k?tli] and [?nd] successfully [s?ks?sf?li] for [f?¦] the [??] reigning [re?n?n] family [f?m?li] of [?v] Holland [h?l?nd]. Beyond [b?j?nd] these [?i¦z] signs [sa?nz] of [?v] his [h?z] activity [?kt?v?ti], however [ha??v?], which [w??] I [a?] merely [m??li] shared [?e?d] with [w??] all [?¦l] the [??] readers [ri¦d?z] of [?v] the [??] daily [de?li] press [pr?s], I [a?] knew [nju¦] little [l?tl] of [?v] my [ma?] former [f?¦m?] friend [fr?nd] and [?nd] companion [k?mp?nj?n].

One [w?n] night [na?t] – it [?t] was [w?z] on [?n] the [??] twentieth [tw?nt???] of [?v] March [m?¦?], 1888 [e?ti¦n] [e?ti] [e?t] – I [a?] was [w?z] returning [r?t?¦n?n] from [fr?m] a [?] journey [??¦ni] to [tu¦] a [?] patient [pe???nt] (for [f?¦r] I [a?] had [h?d] now [na?] returned [r?t?¦nd] to [tu¦] civil [s?vl] practice [pr?kt?s]), when [w?n] my [ma?] way [we?] led [l?d] me [mi¦] through [?ru¦] Baker [be?k?] Street [stri¦t]. As [?z] I [a?] passed [p?¦st] the [??] well-remembered [w?l] [r?m?mb?d] door [d?¦], which [w??] must [m?st] always [?¦lwe?z] be [bi¦] associated [?s????e?t?d] in [?n] my [ma?] mind [ma?nd] with [w??] my [ma?] wooing [wu¦?n], and [?nd] with [w??] the [??] dark [d?¦k] incidents [?ns?d?nts] of [?v] the [??] Study [st?di] in [?n] Scarlet [sk?¦l?t], I [a?] was [w?z] seized [si¦zd] with [w??] a [?] keen [ki¦n] desire [d?za??] to [tu¦] see [si¦] Holmes [h??mz] again [?g?n], and [?nd] to [tu¦] know [n??] how [ha?] he [hi¦] was [w?z] employing [?mpl???n] his [h?z] extraordinary [?kstr?¦dnri] powers [pa??z]. His [h?z] rooms [ru¦mz] were [w?¦] brilliantly [br?lj?ntli] lit [l?t], and [?nd], even [i¦v?n] as [?z] I [a?] looked [l?kt] up [?p], I [a?] saw [s?¦] his [h?z] tall [t?¦l], spare [spe?] figure [f?g?] pass [p?¦s] twice [twa?s] in [?n] a [?] dark [d?¦k] silhouette [s?lu?t] against [?g?nst] the [??] blind [bla?nd]. He [hi¦] was [w?z] pacing [pe?s?n] the [??] room [ru¦m] swiftly [sw?ftli], eagerly [i¦g?li], with [w??] his [h?z] head [h?d] sunk [s?nk] upon [?p?n] his [h?z] chest [??st] and [?nd] his [h?z] hands [h?ndz] clasped [kl?¦spt] behind [b?ha?nd] him [h?m]. To [tu¦] me [mi¦], who [hu¦] knew [nju¦] his [h?z] every [?vri] mood [mu¦d] and [?nd] habit [h?b?t], his [h?z] attitude [?t?tju¦d] and [?nd] manner [m?n?] told [t??ld] their [?e?r] own [??n] story [st?¦ri]. He [hi¦] was [w?z] at [?t] work [w?¦k] again [?g?n]. He [hi¦] had [h?d] risen [r?zn] out [a?t] of [?v] his [h?z] drug-created [dr?g] [krie?t?d] dreams [dri¦mz] and [?nd] was [w?z] hot [h?t] upon [?p?n] the [??] scent [s?nt] of [?v] some [s?m] new [nju¦] problem [pr?bl?m]. I [a?] rang [r?n] the [??] bell [b?l] and [?nd] was [w?z] shown [???n] up [?p] to [tu¦] the [??] chamber [?e?mb?] which [w??] had [h?d] formerly [f?¦m?li] been [bi¦n] in [?n] part [p?¦t] my [ma?] own [??n].

His [h?z] manner [m?n?] was [w?z] not [n?t] effusive [?fju¦s?v]. It [?t] seldom [s?ld?m] was [w?z]; but [b?t] he [hi¦] was [w?z] glad [gl?d], I [a?] think [??nk], to [tu¦] see [si¦] me [mi¦]. With [w??] hardly [h?¦dli] a [?] word [w?¦d] spoken [sp??k?n], but [b?t] with [w??] a [?] kindly [ka?ndli] eye [a?], he [hi¦] waved [we?vd] me [mi¦] to [tu¦] an [?n] armchair [?¦m?e?], threw [?ru¦] across [?kr?s] his [h?z] case [ke?s] of [?v] cigars [s?g?¦z], and [?nd] indicated [?nd?ke?t?d] a [?] spirit [sp?r?t] case [ke?s] and [?nd] a [?] gasogene in [?n] the [??] corner [k?¦n?]. Then [??n] he [hi¦] stood [st?d] before [b?f?¦] the [??] fire [fa??r] and [?nd] looked [l?kt] me [mi¦] over [??v?r] in [?n] his [h?z] singular [s?ngj?l?r] introspective [?ntr??sp?kt?v] fashion [f???n].
«Wedlock [w?dl?k] suits [sju¦ts] you [ju¦],» he [hi¦] remarked [r?m?¦kt]. «I [a?] think [??nk], Watson [w?ts?n], that [??t] you [ju¦] have [h?v] put [p?t] on [?n] seven [s?vn] and [?nd] a [?] half [h?¦f] pounds [pa?ndz] since [s?ns] I [a?] saw [s?¦] you [ju¦].»
«Seven [s?vn]!» I [a?] answered [?¦ns?d].
