Research is an integral component of any undergraduate healthcare course, and is also vital for continuing professional development (CPD). This book is an invaluable guide for students and practitioners who need to acquire a wide range of relevant skills, and it will equip them not only to assess the quality of published studies and apply findings to clinical practice, but also to undertake research themselves. An experienced team of contributors provide detailed explanations of the main concepts and methods used in critical appraisal of published research, and guide the reader in integrating these quality indicators into their own studies to ensure rigour in planning, design, and execution. Drawing on both quantitative and qualitative approaches, the authors write with an emphasis on the development of sound research skills through case-based illustrative examples and scenarios, with helpful summaries and practical exercises throughout. The incidence and prevalence of diabetes is increasing globally, and most health professionals are likely to care for people with diabetes. In such cases they may often find that they have to make clinical decisions without expert support, which can be difficult for both patient and carer. Managing Clinical Problems in Diabetes provides this support by exploring common clinical problems in diabetes care, and providing practical solutions based on evidence and the clinical experience of diabetes educators, endocrinologists, general practitioners, and other health professionals who encounter such problems on a daily basis. Each chapter begins with an introductory section presenting an overview of the management of diabetes, including short and long term complications and management targets across the lifespan. The authors then pose commonly encountered diabetes management problems, developing comprehensive responses from a range of relevant health professionals who each provide management suggestions from t…
Pregnancy is a time when women need to be prepared mentally and physically to meet the challenges of childbirth and the transitions to parenthood. However, this needs to be within the realms of safe practice. The study on which this book is based is derived from the author's work as a midwife with a special interest in exercise. The main aims of the study were to investigate the effects of undertaking a regular exercise programme during and following pregnancy on psychological well-being, pregnancy and birth outcomes. Data were collected at three time points during and following pregnancy using a variety of outcome measures and were analysed using appropriate statistical testing. Conclusions were drawn indicating that women who participated in regular physical activity tended to have protection against reduction of psychological well-being as measured by a variety of psychological constructs.
This book provides a complete, easy-to-use handbook for nurses who see patients with heart failure. In recent years heart failure has become a high priority in health care. Even though primary and community care managers face the same challenges as their hospital counterparts they’ve never had an equivalent range of methods for evaluating workforce size and mix. So this book aims to set the record straight by explaining community demand and supply side workforce planning and development. Eight chapters set out the main variables, from dependency and workload, activity and performance, staff education, recruitment and retention, before the most recent data are synthesised into a set of software-supported algorithms that managers can easily adopt. The book and software enable readers to not only compare their organisations with those in the same socio-economic group but also against ‘best-practice’ staffing and performance. Both help managers determine if their stock of workers is equitable, efficient and effective. Finally, a large annotated bibliography helps users locate relevant publications, and readers should look out for workshops in 2006 designed take them through the …
Nurses should have the most up-to-date knowledge to provide accurate information and competent nursing care to patients with colorectal cancer. Swan addresses those issues in a very thorough and comprehensive manner. Chapters on the role of the colorectal nurse specialist, epidemiology and genetics, diagnosis, investigations and different treatments make this book essential reading for any colorectal nurse specialist. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in men, and the second most common cancer in women in the UK. Colorectal Cancer is a very important book in this field. As mortality statistics continue to rise, this book addresses the issues surrounding colorectal cancer. It is vital to care for and attend to the needs of these patients.
The book is the first of its kind to specifically outline the psycho-educational nursing interventions required by the anxious, adult patient undergoing elective, ambulatory surgery. Anxiety management is a considerable issue for the majority of surgical patients and has been recognised as such for many decades. However, no formal nursing intervention currently exists to support patients during this acute phase. This book is one of the first to provide strong evidence for the way in which patients can be assisted in the management of their anxiety. Moreover, it provides future direction for surgical nursing intervention in this new era of minimal invasive surgery where patients undergoing elective procedures increasingly require less physical nursing intervention and spend very little time within the acute hospital setting.
Epidurals are increasingly popular and have become more versatile, with applications in adult surgery, trauma, obstetrics and paediatric practice. Increasing demands on acute hospital resources, together with a reduction in the number of available beds, has placed a greater emphasis on the need for rapid and effective assessment of patients in order to determine their need for hospital adsmission. This has led to the widespread emergence of the specialist Medical Assessment Unit (MAU). This timely book provides an up- to-date guide to the assessment and immediate management of patients with acute medical conditions. It presents a structured approach based on common presenting features and focuses on the first twenty four hours of the patient?s stay in hospital. In writing this book, the editors have been able to draw on their own clinical experiences as a charge nurse in Accident and Emergency nursing and a sister in acute cardiology and respectively.
Accountability is a key concern for nurses and midwives in the NHS today. Professional accountability—being responsible for your actions and for the outcomes of these actions—is part of the framework of clinical governance, which aims to provide good quality, cost-effective, evidence-based care. The second edition of Accountability in Nursing and Midwifery addresses current issues and key concerns in accountability, focusing on accountability in the four main branches of nursing (adult, child, learning disabilities and mental health), as well as in midwifery, community nursing, and nursing management. In an increasingly litigious society, the ethical and legal implications of accountability are growing and it is important that nurses understand the implications for everyday practice.

This work discusses the methodology and available evidence from systematic reviews on the current best practice in anaesthesia and analgesia. The first edition is built upon in this thoroughly revised and updated text. Contributions are from acknowledged world authorities on systematic review in the specialty. The free access website continues to provide added detail on the literature.
This accessible and friendly text is based on the premise that all nurses need a working knowledge of the normal functioning of the human body. It is only when we understand the normal that the abnormal pathological situation makes sense. If we can understand how the body goes wrong then it often becomes obvious what needs to be done to treat the disorder. So physiology and pathophysiology can both be used to inform our clinical interventions and provide us with rationales for care. In this concise text, John Campbell explains the physiology and necessary basic science in a way that is easy to understand and learn. Diagrams are an important part of this philosophy.
With contributions from: Eric Blyth, Ken Daniels, Julia Feast, Robert Lee, Nina Martin, Alexina McWhinnie, Derek Morgan, Clare Murray, Sharon Pettle, Claire Potter, Jim Richards and Francoise Shenfield The separation of procreation from conception has broadened notions of parenthood and created novel dilemmas. A woman may carry a foetus derived from gametes neither or only one of which came from her or her partner; or she may carry a foetus created using in vitro fertilisation (IVF) with the purpose of handing it to two other parents one, neither or both of whom may be genetically related to the prospective child. Parents may consist of single-sex couples, only one of them genetically related to the child; the prospective mother may be past her menopause; and genetic parenthood after death is now achievable. In a world increasingly reliant on medical science, how can the argument that equates traditional with natural and novel with unnatural/unethical be justified? Should there be legislation, which is no…

It addresses important questions such as: Why are women being pressured into caesarean section for breech presentation when the evidence is equivocal? If a baby needs assisted ventilation breaths at birth, why not bring the ambubag to the baby and leave the cord intact so the baby can benefit from the extra maternal oxygen supply? Why is skin-to-skin contact at birth so rarely offered to preterm babies when there is evidence of benefit? This well-regarded text promotes normality and woman-centred care, using research, evidence-based guidelines and anecdotal accounts from wome…
